Good food that doesn’t break the bank in London

June 7, 2013

What is the national cuisine or dish in the UK? Some would say it’s Indian food, and some would say it’s Fish & Chips. I dare say that food is not the first thing you think about when you think London. In this particular trip, we have tasted both “national” dishes, and also upscale restaurants in Chelsea.

But at the end of our rainy stay in London, I want to recommend and write about a truly delightful meal in London that is neither of those.

#1 Upstairs at The Ten Bells

Where: 84 Commercial Street, London E1 6LY, London, UK
What: Dinner
Notable: Situated beside a church and above a bar, it is unmistakably charming and perfect for a relaxed meal with daily menus. Closed on Mondays and Sunday evenings. You can make reservations on their website!
Price: Regular European dinner prices

Braised Rabbit Croustillant, Button Mushroom & Lemon

If you had rabbit before, you know what you are in for. Small chunks of pulled braised rabbit atop a crispy wafer thin croustillant, slightly hidden beneath paper thin shavings of fresh button mushrooms. This light appetizer is delightful to eat. The lemon and delicate textures mixes really well with the savory taste of the braised rabbit. Yum…

Plaice, Buckwheat Pancake, Leeks & Monks Beard

Plaice is also known as flatfish. It is a white fleshed fish with a very subtle flavor on its own. This is also a light dish. A perfectly cooked filet of Plaice: juicy on the inside with a nice golden brown crust on the outside. Combined with a fine textured pancake, each bite invites another.

Roast Lamb Saddle, Spelt, Artichokes & Nettles

Being a huge fan of lamb, this dish was an easy winner. The lamb was cooked just right, tender and juicy on the inside, and browned beautifully on the outside. The brown sauce was mildly sweet, and the nettle sauce tasted like spring! They accompanied each piece of lamb really nicely.

I love lamb.

What: Lunch
Notable: Any kind of food you can imagine! Numerous stalls spreading smells and sharing their cuisines, open from 10am to 5pm on Sundays. A perfect place to browse and sample different kinds of food.
Price: Affordable fare
