I read about Barcelona in these novels before my first visit. Zafon paints a vivid Barcelona and along with the plot, brings out a more gritty version of this usually sunny city. In combination with the 4 days of rain during our last visit, my impressions of Barcelona consisted of softer colors and left me with a real world “Zafonic” impression of this city.
As difficult as it is to take any city and reduce it to its essential colors, this one was especially surprising. Part of me wanted to include more of the eccentric, candy tones as seen in Gaudi’s mosaics, but I was drawn to the soft, muted palette that gracefully blankets the broad boulevards and narrow gothic passages.
We were told by our friend currently living in Barcelona that it never rains for more than two days but I’m sure we’ll be back to see what other tricks this city has up its sleeves.
